Sessions will be held at: Burbage Common

Please park in the Main Car park Leicester Road entrance where the play area and cafe are situated and we will meet on the field just beyond the play area. We will wait in that first field and play games for up to 10 minutes or until all children have arrived – whichever comes first so please feel free to arrive up to 15 minutes early and no more than 10 minutes late. Please text 07841 159684  if you are unable to attend your usual session.

As the English explorer Ranulph Fiennes once said ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing’!  So, please ensure waterproof and warm clothing is worn, preferably with layers so that children don’t get too hot either. Sessions will continue except in the most extreme weather  If Forest School is cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, we will not refund for this session.  This is due to us adhering to our Health and Safety Policy and our Insurance Policy.

The following items are essential:- Completed Registration/ Medical Forms - Wellies- Long trousers- Long sleeved top- Waterproof jacket- Hat (for warmth/sun as appropriate!)-  Any medication- Snacks and drinks (ideally some healthy picnic bits to share). We also suggest you bring with you a complete change of clothes & shoes for the journey home and a plastic bag for dirty kit!

Our Forest School approach and the unstructured woodland environment provides children with the opportunities to manage their own risks and push their individual boundaries, allowing them to build their confidence, creativity, co-ordination, core strength, self-esteem and body awareness.

During our sessions we will play games, bug hunt, climb trees, make crafts, build dens, use tools, balance across and swing on ropes, cook on the camp fire, sing songs, read stories, relax in the hammocks and enjoy free-range play!

Sessions are relaxed and the activities we provide are available for any child who chooses to take part. Some children will choose to run, climb and explore and this is important because children learn best when they are guided by their own interests and at their own pace. Repetition plays a large role in early years learning so we encourage children to revisit activities or experiences that they have previously enjoyed.

What to expect at Forest School
At Katylou’s Forest School, learning through play is our priority. Learning outcomes are secondary and less important to us than the actual process of doing something as it is during the process that children actually learn. Whilst in the sessions, children will be encouraged to play, explore and attempt challenges; even if not successful at first... they can always try again.
The process of learning from our mistakes is truly invaluable, and is something we need to embrace, not avoid. After all, if we didn’t have failure, how would we know what to do next? If Thomas Edison had not learned from his mistakes… we would still be living in darkness. If Henry Ford had given up, we would still be riding on horseback and if Alexander Graham Bell had given in to the clutches of failure, we wouldn’t have phones!
We understand that every failure brings you one step closer to success, and that this is a natural part of the process. We encourage children to become independent and use their own imagination and initiatives to follow their inquisitive nature and think more creatively with what is around them. This is best achieved with minimal intervention from us, so we will often stand back and just observe each child during sessions. With encouragement from parents and support when required, children rely on instinct and initiative to become confident learners and individuals.
We allow children choices, so although we provide activities and resources and have planning for sessions, what each child wishes to do during our sessions is their choice, whether that means they choose to be immersed in the activities, or immersed in their thoughts.

Most of our work as Forest School leaders is undertaken between sessions when we use our observations to focus on each child’s individual preferences and we will build upon experiences and interests from the previous week and ensure to extend these through our choice of resources and planning activities for the following week.
As adults we often interrupt a child’s imagination and guide them without even realising yet children are great problem solvers and this is a fabulous skill to possess but it wont develop without a child being given the chance. Therefore, you are most welcome to stay during the sessions and learn yourself but please let your child lead and enjoy watching them grow in confidence and capability, expect mess, free range children and most importantly expect lots of laughter and fun!
